Sunderland marked their long-awaited Premier League return in stunning fashion with a commanding 3-0 victory over West Ham United, who set an unwanted record by losing the opening match of a top-flight season for the 17th time.

Back in the Premier League for the first time in over eight years, the Stadium of Light was buzzing with anticipation. Early nerves showed as Jarrod Bowen forced Robin Roefs into a save at the near post, but the Black Cats quickly found their rhythm. Habib Diarra combined smartly with Eliezer Mayenda for Sunderland’s first real chance inside 10 minutes, while Daniel Ballard blocked a low drive from El Hadji Malick Diouf at the other end.

As half-time approached, Bowen continued to threaten, but Graham Potter’s side couldn’t make their pressure count, and Sunderland went into the break with a clean sheet intact.

Régis Le Bris’ men emerged stronger after the interval, with Simon Adingra flashing an effort wide before the breakthrough finally came just after the hour. Omar Alderete’s pinpoint cross was met brilliantly by Mayenda, who stretched to head home and ignite wild celebrations.

West Ham, despite introducing Callum Wilson to boos from the home fans, offered little in response and were punished again in the 73rd minute. This time it was Adingra supplying the delivery, with Ballard rising highest to double Sunderland’s lead.

The Black Cats sealed a dream return when a late third capped off a memorable day for the Wearside faithful, who watched their side announce their Premier League comeback in emphatic style.
