Well-known Yoruba film star Olatunji Lekan has described the tragic event that resulted in his wife’s death, demonstrating how a misdiagnosis postponed appropriate treatment until the illness had progressed to a more severe stage.
Speaking during an interview with OYINMOMO TV on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, the actor said the health crisis began with what appeared to be a minor complaint of back pain, but later turned out to be cancer.
“If there is no money, that will be the excuse. When she was complaining about her back, about the back pain, we took her to a very good hospital. They said it could be muscular strain. Later, some said it was ulcer. They gave her some drugs. It’s as if the drugs are pain relief. When she takes the drugs, the pain will stop,” Lekan narrated.
The actor explained that the situation worsened suddenly while he was on a movie set.

“One day, I was at a movie location when she called me that she can’t walk again. I was like, you can’t walk again? What happened? Immediately, I rushed home. When I saw what happened, I went to buy a wheelchair myself, 120,000 Naira, and started pushing her around because we don’t know what is happening,” he said.
According to him, efforts to seek help through physiotherapy eventually led to a doctor who suspected a more serious condition.
“During physiotherapy, I met a doctor who told me I should come and see him in his office after the therapy. Then he checked my wife and noticed there was no pulse from her lower back to some extent. Then he recommended us to go and run a test, but he told us not to run it in Abeokuta, an MRI test in Lagos. On getting the result, I started crying. It was cancer, stage 4,” Lekan recalled. The actor disclosed that the first surgery cost ₦8.5 million.
