Wayne Rooney has parted ways with Championship club Plymouth Argyle by mutual consent, ending his tenure after less than seven months in charge.

Rooney, who took over in May, faced a difficult run, overseeing just four wins and 13 defeats in 23 league matches. The team’s struggles culminated in a 2-0 loss to Oxford United, marking their sixth defeat in a winless streak. While Rooney remained resolute against criticism, the ongoing poor results led to a decision focused on the club’s future direction.

The former Birmingham City manager was appointed with optimism, seen as the right person to implement an attacking style of play. However, Plymouth struggled both offensively and defensively, managing the joint fewest goals in the league and conceding more than any other team in England’s top four divisions.

Rooney’s departure also sees assistant head coach Mike Phelan and first-team coach Simon Ireland leave the club. Kevin Nancekivell, along with club captain Joe Edwards, will temporarily take charge for the upcoming match against Bristol City.

In a statement following his departure, Rooney expressed his gratitude: “I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the board of Plymouth Argyle Football Club for their support. I am grateful to all the staff who made me feel welcome, as well as to the players and the dedicated fans for their encouragement during my time here. The experiences at Home Park will always hold a special place in my heart.”
