Former Premier League referee David Coote has taken on a surprising new role as a delivery driver after being suspended from football until June 2026 by UEFA.
Once considered one of England’s top officials, Coote’s career was derailed by a series of off-field controversies that led to his lengthy ban. UEFA imposed the suspension citing breaches of professional conduct and damage to the sport’s reputation. Additionally, the English refereeing board terminated his contract after an internal investigation.

Coote’s downfall was linked to multiple incidents, including allegations of verbal abuse directed at former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp and a leaked video showing him inhaling a white powder substance.
Speaking to The Sun, Coote reflected on his new role:
“I just want to move on. It’s important to find meaning in life and be responsible. This job helps me relax, but I don’t see it as a new career.”
He also opened up about the personal challenges behind his behavior, revealing that much of his erratic conduct stemmed from the pressure of concealing his sexual orientation.
Now 41, Coote hopes his time away from football will give him the space to rebuild his life. He currently has no plans to return to refereeing once his ban is lifted.
