Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim surprised many by admitting that he isn’t focused on winning this season’s Europa League, instead setting his sights on “bigger things.”
With the Red Devils recently knocked out of the FA Cup by Fulham and struggling near the bottom of the Premier League table, the Europa League is now United’s only remaining path to success this season. Triumph in the competition would also guarantee automatic qualification for next season’s Champions League, offering both financial rewards and prestige.
Despite the potential rewards, Amorim emphasized a longer-term vision. “People are viewing the Europa League as a unique competition we can win, especially with the Champions League connection,” he told Sky Sports. “But, to be honest, I think we have bigger things to focus on. I know it’s strange to say that, but what we’re trying to build here is more important than winning a cup right now.”

While acknowledging the importance of competing for trophies, Amorim stressed that the club’s future development holds more significance at this moment. “We understand the responsibility to fight for every trophy, but right now we’re building something that will last beyond any trophy,” he explained.
Following United’s FA Cup exit, Amorim boldly stated that the club’s goal is to win the Premier League, a stance that was quickly criticized by Wayne Rooney and others as “naive.” However, the Portuguese coach remained firm in his belief. “I understand what people are saying,” he admitted. “If you look at our current style of play and results, it’s hard to envision big things right now. But even in dark moments, we need a clear path, and that path is clear here.”
Amorim also cast doubt on his future at the club, despite having a contract until 2027. “I don’t know if I’ll be here,” he shrugged. “But the way we’re thinking, we will return and win in the future. However, there are risks involved. We’re doing a lot of things, but when you’re not winning, sometimes changes need to happen, and we understand that.”
He also pointed to the club’s efforts to build something sustainable, despite current struggles. “As a club, we’re doing things that are tough, and some of our staff are paying the price, but we are doing what’s necessary to win in the future.”
United faces a tough last-16 tie against Real Sociedad in the Europa League before even considering a potential path to the final, which may explain Amorim’s decision to downplay the competition’s immediate importance.
