Ruben Amorim has underlined the need to restore Old Trafford as both a fortress and “an enjoyable place” for Manchester United supporters, as he looks to rebuild confidence after last season’s struggles.
United endured their worst top-flight campaign since 1974, suffering nine Premier League home defeats – their joint-highest in a single season. But with several new signings bolstering the squad, Amorim believes there is fresh optimism heading into the new campaign.

The Portuguese coach, who succeeded Erik ten Hag in November, will lead United into their opener against Arsenal on Sunday and wants to begin shifting the mood at Old Trafford.

“It has to be a difficult place for opponents and an enjoyable one for our fans. That is really important,” Amorim said. “This nervous feeling won’t disappear in one day or one game – we have to fight it together, players, coaches, and supporters. But we are going to change things.”
Amorim admitted his side will “struggle in some moments” against title-chasing Arsenal but expressed confidence in his strengthened squad, particularly the attacking options of Benjamin Šeško, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.
“We now have players who can change the momentum of a game,” he explained. “Cunha can create something from nothing, Bryan makes decisive runs, and Šeško gives us presence. These moments can transform the atmosphere inside the stadium.”
With goalkeeper André Onana back from injury and vying to retain his starting role, Amorim insisted no one is guaranteed a place: “Everyone has to earn it.”
United’s new era begins on Sunday, and Amorim hopes it will be the first step in turning Old Trafford back into the intimidating stronghold it once was.
