Real Madrid’s focus remains firmly on hiring Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso as their next head coach, despite ongoing speculation regarding Jurgen Klopp, a report has revealed.
With current manager Carlo Ancelotti expected to depart this summer—though talks regarding a move to Brazil have temporarily stalled—Madrid have begun the search for his successor. Alonso, a former Madrid player, has long been viewed as the ideal candidate to take over, but there are challenges in securing him due to the complications and cost of buying out his current contract.
While some reports have suggested that Real Madrid has made contact with former Liverpool boss Klopp, the speculation has been quickly downplayed. Klopp’s agent recently reaffirmed his contentment with his role as head of global football at Red Bull, further dampening any serious discussions. Even though Real Madrid admires Klopp, particularly within the Santiago Bernabéu, it seems their interest isn’t progressing.

Fabrizio Romano provided further clarification, noting that Real Madrid’s primary focus remains on Alonso. “What I’ve been told is that Real Madrid still consider Alonso as their top choice,” he explained. “At the moment, Klopp is not in advanced talks with Madrid, and Alonso remains the main candidate for the job.”
Romano added that Alonso is already preparing for a potential move to Madrid, with reports suggesting he is drawing up a list of transfer targets, including two midfielders and a defender to strengthen the squad this summer.
As the situation develops, the priority for Real Madrid remains securing Alonso, with an agreement between the former midfielder and the club expected to be straightforward once Bayer Leverkusen’s exit process is completed.
