While a small transfer fee could see him move sooner and be eligible for the FIFA Club World Cup, his exit has sparked frustration among Liverpool supporters. The situation had been brewing for some time. Initial contract talks stalled in summer 2023, and although Liverpool later tabled a lucrative new offer, the right-back ultimately opted to seek a new challenge.

According to AS, even if Madrid sign Juventus prospect Dean Huijsen — whose £50m (€59m) release clause can be paid in installments — they still have eyes on Konaté.
Madrid’s defensive issues are no secret. Antonio Rüdiger has just undergone surgery after a gruelling season, David Alaba is approaching 33, and Eder Militão is recovering from a second ACL injury. Konaté, who turns 26 this year, is seen as entering his prime — and with his Liverpool contract set to expire in 2026, there’s no guarantee he’ll extend his stay.
