Real Madrid Establish New Timeline for Potential Carlo Ancelotti Departure

Carlo Ancelotti is set to remain as Real Madrid manager beyond this weekend’s El Clasico, regardless of the result, according to a report from Spain.

Following Madrid’s Champions League quarter-final exit to Arsenal, speculation intensified around Ancelotti’s future, with some labeling him a ‘dead man walking.’ Early reports suggested the Italian coach would be dismissed after the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona—regardless of the outcome.

Rumors even circulated that Ancelotti might not make it to the final itself. However, he remained in charge for the match and stayed on despite defeat.

According to Spanish outlet El Larguero, the club’s stance hasn’t changed ahead of Sunday’s crucial league clash against Barcelona. Even if Madrid lose again, Ancelotti is expected to retain his position—for now. How this decision affects his potential appointment as Brazil’s next national team coach remains unclear, as the Brazilian FA is eager to finalize their managerial choice soon.

Sunday’s clash at Montjuïc could prove decisive in La Liga’s title race. A Real Madrid win would close the gap to just one point, while a Barcelona victory would open up a seven-point lead with three games remaining, all but sealing the title for Hansi Flick’s side.

The report also notes that Real Madrid plan to have their next permanent manager lead the team at the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup. While Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso is heavily linked with the job, no agreement has been finalized. Even if Alonso signs, there’s no certainty he’ll be released in time to take charge before the Club World Cup begins in mid-June.

Madrid face a similar logistical challenge with reported transfer target Trent Alexander-Arnold, and are said to be considering a nominal fee to convince Liverpool to release the right-back early.
