Manchester United are preparing for a busy summer in the transfer market, with Matheus Cunha expected to be the first of five new signings. The club has identified four more priority positions following the Brazilian’s arrival, and talks are already underway to land a £50m-rated forward who scored 20 Premier League goals this season.

Cunha’s move from Wolves is seen as a major statement by United, particularly as it comes despite their absence from European competitions. His versatility and attacking prowess make him a valuable addition, and he is expected to slot into one of the two attacking midfield roles in Ruben Amorim’s preferred 3-4-2-1 system.

Surprisingly, United’s next target is also an attacker who would occupy a similar role on the pitch. While the club had initially hoped to secure Liam Delap, the young Ipswich striker is now leaning toward Chelsea, leaving United to shift their focus elsewhere.
According to GiveMeSport, Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo is now the top priority. talkSPORT recently reported that United have opened talks with Mbeumo’s representatives. With only one year left on his contract, Brentford are likely to cash in for around £50 million.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed United’s interest, and GMS claims manager Ruben Amorim is ready to accelerate a move for the 25-year-old if the Delap deal falls through.
Mbeumo, who scored a career-best 20 goals and added eight assists in the league this season, is entering his prime. He would likely join Cunha in the dual No. 10 roles, with Bruno Fernandes dropping into a deeper central midfield position — a role he often filled under Amorim late in the season.
There’s still a possibility that both Mbeumo and Delap could arrive at Old Trafford, but with Delap eyeing a move to Chelsea, United’s chances of securing Mbeumo have reportedly increased “significantly.”
A key question remains: would Mbeumo be willing to join a club not competing in Europe? According to TEAMtalk’s Fraser Fletcher, Mbeumo is “intrigued” by the opportunity to play for Manchester United, thanks to their global profile. While not definitive, that’s a positive signal for United.
Other Positions United Are Targeting
Beyond the attacking midfield and striker positions, United are also looking to strengthen at goalkeeper and defensive midfield. The focus is on a holding midfielder who can complement Fernandes in a double pivot, allowing the captain to play further forward.
These deals are expected to progress later in the window, as United are prioritizing improvements in attack to address their struggles in front of goal last season.
With Cunha incoming and Mbeumo potentially next, Manchester United’s attacking setup could look radically different by the start of next season.
