Manchester United have been handed a significant boost in their quest to sign Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, according to transfer journalist Ben Jacobs.
Last season exposed several weaknesses in the Red Devils’ squad, not least in their attack and goalkeeper positions. Although United revamped their goalkeeping options under Erik ten Hag by signing Andre Onana and Altay Bayındır after parting ways with David de Gea, neither has consistently impressed. Onana has struggled for form, while Bayındır does not yet appear ready to be the club’s first-choice keeper.

As a result, Manchester United are now eyeing a new shot-stopper. Jacobs revealed on the United Stand YouTube channel that the club was initially targeting a young goalkeeper as a backup to Onana. However, they are now open to letting Onana leave this summer if the right offer comes in.

In that scenario, United have turned their attention to Martínez. Aston Villa may be forced to sell the Argentine this summer due to potential breaches of the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
Villa had originally valued Martínez at around £40 million, but they might accept offers starting from £25 million to balance their books before the transfer window closes — a huge advantage for United’s pursuit.
The move won’t be straightforward, though. Atlético Madrid are reportedly interested, as are several Saudi Arabian clubs, but Martínez prefers to stay in Europe for now.
The 32-year-old goalkeeper has proven his quality in the Premier League, playing a crucial role in Villa’s top-four finish last season, securing Champions League football for the 2024/25 campaign. His contributions also helped Villa finish in the top six the previous term, guaranteeing European competition once again.
Standing at 6ft 5in, Martínez has also impressed on the international stage, helping Argentina lift the 2022 World Cup and winning two Copa América titles.
Considered one of the world’s best goalkeepers, Martínez would represent a clear upgrade over Onana if Manchester United succeed in signing him this summer.
