Liverpool are reportedly considering Borussia Dortmund centre-back Nico Schlotterbeck as a potential summer target amid ongoing uncertainty over Virgil van Dijk’s future.
Van Dijk’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season, and he recently stated that anyone claiming to know his future plans is “lying,” adding that he has no idea whether he will remain at the club next year. This was followed by reports suggesting a significant contract offer from Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal, which Van Dijk is reportedly contemplating.
With the possibility of losing Van Dijk this summer, Liverpool have started exploring potential replacements, and BILD reports that Schlotterbeck has emerged as a key option on their radar.

Dortmund’s season has been challenging, with the club sitting in 10th place in the Bundesliga and facing a likely miss for next season’s Champions League unless they win the European trophy this year. Despite Dortmund’s struggles, Schlotterbeck, 25, has stood out with his performances. The club is keen to negotiate a new contract with the defender, whose current deal runs until 2027. However, Schlotterbeck is reportedly uncertain, as he wants to play Champions League football.
Liverpool have shown interest and are even said to be willing to pay “well over” €50m (£42m) to secure Schlotterbeck’s services this summer.
Much of the situation will depend on Van Dijk’s future, but Liverpool are also concerned about centre-back partner Ibrahima Konate. The Frenchman, whose contract expires in 2026, has delayed talks on an extension and has publicly expressed interest in clubs like Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain.
