Manchester United’s fall from grace in recent years has been stark, with the club struggling to maintain its once-dominant stature. As the pressure builds, the upcoming season could prove pivotal for incoming manager Ruben Amorim, who faces a number of squad issues—chief among them, the need for a reliable striker.
Rasmus Højlund has led the line at Old Trafford over the past couple of seasons but has struggled for consistency in front of goal. United need a proven No. 9—someone clinical enough to regularly finish chances created by the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Amad Diallo.

One of the names at the top of their wishlist is Viktor Gyökeres, a striker Amorim knows well from their time together at Sporting CP.

According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, writing in his exclusive column for Give Me Sport, Manchester United “have not stopped calling” in their pursuit of the Swedish forward.
Gyökeres: One of Europe’s Deadliest Strikers
The 27-year-old has been in sensational form, emerging as one of Europe’s most prolific forwards. Last season, Gyökeres racked up a remarkable 54 goals and 13 assists in 52 appearances across all competitions—a staggering return that highlights his lethal finishing and all-around contribution.
Romano reports that Sporting are willing to let him leave for a fee in the region of £55 million to £59 million this summer. Given his recent output, that valuation appears justified—and for a club like United, desperate to rebuild their frontline, Gyökeres presents a compelling option.
While he’s under contract at Sporting until 2028, Gyökeres reportedly has an agreement in place with the club to depart if the right offer comes in. Talks between United and Sporting are expected to continue in the coming weeks.
United’s attack is already showing signs of transformation, with Matheus Cunha having recently joined the squad. If Gyökeres follows, it could mark the start of a much-needed offensive overhaul at Old Trafford.
