Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has admitted that if he had endured a season like the recent one at either Barcelona or Real Madrid, he would have been sacked.
City experienced their toughest campaign under Guardiola in the 2024-25 season, finishing third in the Premier League—13 points behind champions Liverpool. They also faced early exits from both the Champions League and Carabao Cup, and suffered a surprise defeat to Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final.

Despite this, Guardiola was rewarded with a contract extension in November.

Reflecting on the differences in management expectations, the former Barcelona boss told DAZN,
“With the year we’ve had, if this were Spain, I wouldn’t be coaching in October, November or December. If this were Barça or Madrid, they would have sacked me. But here it wasn’t even a question. You have to have a little more patience.”
