Manchester City began a new chapter at the revamped FIFA Club World Cup—but it was a familiar face who made the biggest impact in Philadelphia.

Phil Foden, the homegrown academy talent who endured a tough campaign last season, announced his return to form in style. Just two minutes in, he found the net and later set up Jeremy Doku, helping City to a 2-0 victory over Moroccan side Wydad AC in their Group G opener.

With the sun beaming down at Lincoln Financial Field, Foden looked sharp and confident—early signs that he may be rediscovering the form that eluded him last season, when he managed only seven Premier League goals.

Wednesday’s performance suggests Foden could be a key figure in City’s pursuit of success in this tournament.

“A new season, fresh me,” he told Channel 5 after the match. “I’m really looking forward to what’s ahead. This tournament is huge—not just for me, but for everyone. It’s the perfect place to regain sharpness in a big competition.”

“Playing for a club like City means there’s pressure to deliver every time. I’ve grown used to that. Last season was tough for all of us, but it’s time to push on.”

Manager Pep Guardiola praised Foden’s display, calling it “really good” and noting that he operated in a holding midfield role. The only blemish on City’s day was a late red card for Rico Lewis in the 88th minute.
