Dominik Szoboszlai was a surprise omission from Liverpool’s squad for Sunday’s clash against Manchester United, despite being available following his suspension.
The midfielder was expected to start the 4:30 pm kickoff at Anfield, but his absence from the teamsheet raised eyebrows. Instead, manager Arne Slot opted for an unchanged midfield trio of Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, and Curtis Jones, with Wataru Endo and Harvey Elliott available as substitutes.
Reports, including from journalist David Lynch, revealed that Szoboszlai was ruled out due to illness. This comes shortly after Federico Chiesa missed a match for the same reason. Slot had addressed the potential for illness-related absences during his pre-match press conference on Friday, noting, “I assume everyone is fit. Although, we are in the period where some people get sick, but I heard nothing about that yet.”

Given Liverpool’s midfield depth, the decision to rest Szoboszlai appears prudent. Gravenberch, Mac Allister, and Jones have been in excellent form, while Endo and Elliott have impressed in recent appearances.
Liverpool’s squad remains strong, with Tyler Morton and Trey Nyoni also missing out despite training during the week. Meanwhile, there was positive news regarding Ibrahima Konaté and Conor Bradley, who returned to the matchday squad after five weeks sidelined. Konaté started, and Bradley made the bench, providing timely reinforcement with Joe Gomez sidelined due to a hamstring injury.
