Chicago Fire FC is reportedly in discussions with Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne regarding a designated player contract, according to ESPN.
The Fire are in a strong position to secure De Bruyne’s signature if he decides to make the move to MLS. The Belgian international confirmed he would be leaving City at the end of this season, with his contract set to expire in June.
Although Inter Miami CF holds De Bruyne’s discovery rights, a system that grants them a right of first refusal, the club already has the maximum number of designated players—Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, and Lionel Messi—all of whom are out of contract at the end of the season. This situation has cleared the way for Chicago to make a move.

Other MLS clubs, including New York City FC and D.C. United, are also reportedly interested, but with only two designated players on their roster and ambitious ownership under Joe Mansueto, the Fire appears to be a prime destination should De Bruyne decide to join MLS.
