Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has shared his thoughts on why his side was eliminated from the FIFA Club World Cup, despite securing a 1-0 win over Botafogo in their final Group B match on Monday.
Atletico finished the group stage with six points, but it wasn’t enough to progress to the Round of 16 due to goal difference. Botafogo and Paris Saint-Germain advanced instead, having finished in the top two spots.

Speaking after the match, Simeone pointed to the level of competition in their group as a key factor in their early exit.

“People will say we got knocked out, but it was the most difficult group, and we’re out on goal difference,” the Argentine said.
“We’re used to this—we play in La Liga against Barcelona and Real Madrid, and we always manage to qualify for the Champions League.”
He added: “We were in a group with the Champions League and Copa Libertadores winners. We finished with the same points as them, so yes, we’re calm. We know what needs to be improved.”
