Real Madrid legend Marcelo has revealed his personal choice for the 2025 Ballon d’Or, backing former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo to take home the prestigious prize.
The Brazilian made the comments after featuring in a charity match between Real Madrid legends and Borussia Dortmund legends on Saturday, which ended in a thrilling 3-3 draw. Goals from Julio Baptista, Toni Kroos, and Raúl secured the result for the Madrid side.

When asked post-match who he believes should win this year’s Ballon d’Or, Marcelo replied simply:
“Who should win the Ballon d’Or? Cristiano Ronaldo,” as quoted by Madrid Zone.

Ronaldo, 39, had another impressive season in Saudi Arabia, scoring 25 goals to finish as the Saudi Pro League’s top scorer. He also led Portugal to the UEFA Nations League final, where they are set to face Spain.
Despite Marcelo’s endorsement, Ronaldo is not considered a frontrunner for the award this year. The current list of top contenders includes Barcelona’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, PSG winger Ousmane Dembélé, Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappé, and Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah.
Interestingly, Ronaldo recently commented that the Ballon d’Or should go to a player who wins the UEFA Champions League—a sentiment Marcelo appears to challenge by backing him regardless.
While Marcelo’s pick may not align with the odds or current form guides, it reflects the deep respect and admiration he still holds for his former teammate and five-time Ballon d’Or winner.
