Arsenal are reportedly on the verge of finalizing the sale of dynamic full-back Nuno Tavares to Lazio, but the Gunners’ interest in the defender extends beyond this transfer.
Tavares joined Arsenal from Benfica in 2021 as a promising prospect, having shown glimpses of potential while serving as Alejandro Grimaldo’s backup. When Kieran Tierney’s injury struck, manager Mikel Arteta had no choice but to thrust the then-21-year-old into the high-pressure environment of Premier League football.
Known for his energetic runs down the flank, Tavares showed promise at times, although he also had some tough moments, the most memorable being his early substitution after just 34 minutes in Arsenal’s FA Cup third-round loss to Nottingham Forest.

Arteta quickly decided that Tavares would spend the following two seasons on loan, including a year at Nottingham Forest’s City Ground, before moving to Lazio for another temporary spell last summer.
During his time in Italy, Tavares has impressed, registering a team-high eight assists, and Lazio are now expected to activate the buy clause in his contract, which is reported to be between €7-8m (£5.9-6.7m), according to the Evening Standard.
While Arsenal will incur a small loss on the £6.8m they paid for Tavares four years ago, there remains a possibility of making a profit. The deal between the two clubs is said to include a sell-on clause, allowing Arsenal to receive around 25% of any future transfer fee Lazio may secure for the player.
Tavares’ sale is just one part of Arsenal’s summer transfer strategy. To fund the acquisition of a much-needed centre-forward, the Gunners are reportedly considering selling Leandro Trossard to the Saudi Pro League. Additionally, Jorginho is expected to leave, although his departure will only impact the wage bill as he enters the final phase of his contract.
