Liverpool paid an emotional tribute to Diogo Jota during their first match at Anfield since the tragic death of the Portuguese forward.

Jota, 28, died in a car accident in Spain in July, alongside his younger brother, Andre Silva, aged 25. The Reds marked their return to Anfield with a double-header of pre-season friendlies against Athletic Bilbao on Monday, kicking off at 17:00 and 20:00 BST.

Before the opening match, Liverpool legend Phil Thompson and Athletic Club president Jon Uriarte laid wreaths on the edge of the six-yard box in remembrance. Around the stadium, digital billboards displayed the message: “Rest in Peace Diogo Jota and Andre Silva – You’ll Never Walk Alone.”

Supporters held up flags and banners in honour of Jota, singing his chant throughout the evening. The club also confirmed that Jota’s iconic No. 20 shirt has been officially retired.

In both matches, play was paused in the 20th minute as players, staff, and fans joined in a minute of applause to commemorate Jota’s life and legacy.

Jota made 182 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 65 goals and helping the club win the Premier League, FA Cup, and League Cup after joining from Wolves in 2020.

Writing in his matchday notes, Liverpool manager Arne Slot paid tribute:
“I know that you will want to pay your tributes before, during and after the games, and I know that we will hear his song ringing out throughout the evening.”

“It has been a tough time for everyone connected with the club, but especially for Diogo’s family—his wife, children, and close friends. We cannot imagine the pain they are experiencing, and the club will continue to offer all the support we can. Diogo will always be with us—in our hearts and our thoughts.”

Liverpool now turn their focus to Sunday’s Community Shield clash against Crystal Palace at Wembley, before beginning their Premier League campaign at Anfield against Bournemouth on Friday, 15 August.
