The Super Falcons of Nigeria sealed a place in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over defending champions South Africa.

Nigeria looked dangerous early on, nearly breaking the deadlock within the first 12 minutes. Chiwendu Ihezuo was played through by a brilliant pass from Ashleigh Plumptre in the 11th minute, but South Africa goalkeeper Andile Dlamini made a fine save. Just a minute later, Dlamini was called into action again, stopping Esther Okoronkwo’s effort.

Despite South Africa’s fluid midfield play, they rarely troubled Nigerian goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie.

The breakthrough came just before halftime when Nigeria were awarded a penalty after Bomgeka Gamede handled the ball in the box. Captain Rasheedat Ajibade stepped up and converted confidently, though Dlamini managed to get a hand on the ball.

South Africa drew level in the 60th minute, with Linda Motlhalo converting a penalty of their own.

However, in stoppage time, Nigeria’s right-back fired in a stunning long-range strike to clinch the win and send the Super Falcons through to the final.
