Liverpool Football Club have announced the retirement of the number 20 jersey in honour of Diogo Jota, following his tragic death in a car accident last week. The decision applies across all levels of the club, including the men’s and women’s teams, as well as the Academy.
In an official statement, the Premier League champions said:
“It was the number he wore with pride and distinction, leading us to countless victories in the process – and Diogo Jota will forever be Liverpool Football Club’s number 20.”
The club emphasized that the tribute reflects not only Jota’s immense contributions on the pitch over the last five years but also the deep personal impact he had on teammates, staff, and fans.

Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, died in a car crash in Spain’s Zamora province. Authorities reported that the vehicle lost control at high speed due to a tyre blowout, veered off the road, and caught fire.
Michael Edwards, FSG CEO of Football, added:
“As a club, we were all acutely aware of the sentiment of our supporters – and we felt exactly the same way. It was vitally important to involve Diogo’s wife, Rute, and his family in the decision. I believe this is the first time in Liverpool’s history that such an honour has been bestowed. This is a unique tribute to a uniquely wonderful person.”
“By retiring this squad number, we are making it eternal – and therefore never to be forgotten. Diogo joined us in 2020, he won us number 20, and he wore it with honour, distinction, and affection. As far as Liverpool Football Club is concerned, he will be forever our number 20.”
Jota, 28, joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020 and became a key figure in the club’s recent success, helping them win the Premier League, FA Cup, and two EFL Cups.
Internationally, he earned 49 caps and scored 14 goals for Portugal, playing a crucial role in their UEFA Nations League triumphs in 2019 and 2025. He had only recently celebrated the latest victory with his national teammates.
Liverpool also confirmed that a series of tributes will be held in memory of Jota and his brother during their upcoming friendly against Preston North End on Friday.
