Argentina World Cup winner Ángel Di María has officially announced the end of his professional football career in Europe.
The 37-year-old made the revelation in an emotional post shared on Instagram on Wednesday.
His statement comes just days after he featured for Benfica in their Club World Cup Round of 16 loss to Chelsea, where he currently leads the tournament’s scoring chart.

“Today, it’s time to return home. My career in Europe is over,” Di María wrote. “After 18 years playing in Europe, it’s time to go back.”
He went on to thank the clubs he represented during his illustrious career: Benfica, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, and Juventus.
“Grateful for the memories, the lessons, and the friendships. I leave fulfilled and proud. Farewell, Europe — what a journey it’s been,” he added.
Di María enjoyed a decorated career across Europe’s top clubs and leaves the continent as one of the most accomplished Argentine players of his generation.
