Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has strongly criticized the Kano State Government over the N1 million compensation offered to the families of 22 athletes who tragically died in a motor accident while returning from the National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The state government announced the compensation on Saturday, pledging N1 million to each bereaved family.

However, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), Sani condemned the gesture as inadequate, especially considering that the athletes lost their lives while representing Kano State in active service.
“One million for each of the deceased athletes is not enough. Kano is rich enough to do more than that. The deceased died in active service,”
— Shehu Sani, Saturday
Sani’s statement has since sparked discussions on the value placed on athletes and public servants, especially in the face of national tragedy.
