The prestigious Ballon d’Or ceremony is set to take place on September 22, 2024, featuring a historic shift: for the first time, an equal number of awards will be presented to male and female players, organizers announced on Monday.
Hosted at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, the event will be jointly organized by France Football magazine and UEFA. This year’s edition introduces several new categories for women, including Best Women’s Goalkeeper, Best Young Women’s Player, and Top Women’s Scorer in club or international competitions.
With these additions, both male and female players will now compete for six awards each. The ceremony will also include the Socrates Award, honoring humanitarian and solidarity efforts by any player, regardless of gender.

Nominees across all categories will be revealed in early August.
The 2023 ceremony faced backlash after Real Madrid boycotted the event due to Vinicius Junior missing out on the Best Men’s Player award, which was awarded to Manchester City’s Rodri instead.
The 2024 edition aims to be more inclusive and celebratory, reflecting a significant step forward in recognizing football talent equally across genders.
