Nigerian football legend Jay-Jay Okocha has expressed his support for the Super Eagles’ hopes of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, backing the team despite their challenging situation under new head coach Eric Chelle.

Okocha, who was a standout performer during the 1994 AFCON, the 1994 World Cup, and the 1996 Olympics, remains hopeful about Nigeria’s chances of securing a spot in the expanded 2026 tournament. “If I say we don’t have any chance, I will be telling lies. We are not in the best position, but we still have a chance of qualifying, whether through the playoffs or other means.”

Okocha’s belief in the current squad is unshaken, as he continues to watch from the sidelines. The 51-year-old, who played a key role in Nigeria’s 1996 Olympic gold medal and the 1998 World Cup campaign, emphasized the power of football to unite the nation.

“We know how serious football is in Nigeria and how it brings us together. I hope the team qualifies,” he added.

As the Super Eagles face a crucial phase in their World Cup qualifying campaign, Okocha’s words serve as a rallying cry for fans, players, and coach Eric Chelle, urging them to stay optimistic and continue fighting for Nigeria’s World Cup dreams.
