Trent Alexander-Arnold has announced he will leave Liverpool at the end of the season, ending a two-decade journey with his boyhood club in search of a new challenge.
The 26-year-old right-back, who grew up just around the corner from the club’s old Melwood training ground, admitted he had strongly considered extending his contract before ultimately deciding it was time for a change.

“After giving everything day in, day out for 20 years, I’ve reached a point where I feel I need a new challenge—for me as a player and as a person,” he told the club’s official site. “I think now is the right time for me to do that.”
Although speculation has linked Alexander-Arnold with a move to Real Madrid, he declined to confirm his next destination. Instead, he focused on explaining the timing of his announcement, saying he chose to speak out only after Liverpool’s season goals had effectively been settled.
“When we were in a title race and pushing for trophies, I didn’t want to distract from what we were trying to do on the pitch,” he said. “Now, with nothing major left to play for, I felt it was the right moment to get this off my chest and be honest with the fans.”
Alexander-Arnold leaves Liverpool having won every major club honour, including two Premier League titles. While many fans are disheartened by his decision to depart in his prime, he acknowledged the emotional weight of the choice.
“I know this will disappoint and upset people,” he said. “But I will always love the club, the people, and the fans. Even though I’m leaving as a player, I’ll always be a Liverpool supporter.”
