Ibrahim Chatta, a seasoned actor and filmmaker in the Yoruba part of Nollywood, has offered insight into his difficult early years in Lagos before finding success in the film world. Chatta talked about the difficulties he faced after moving to the busy city from his hometown in an interview with TVC News.
After his father’s death, his mother wanted him to stay in school, but Chatta was determined to forge a different path. Believing education wasn’t suited for him, he headed to Lagos to pursue acting, only to discover that life in the city was far tougher than he had imagined.
Without a formal education or certificate, he faced rejection and limited opportunities. He even tried to become a gateman but was turned down due to his lack of the required SSCE. To make a living, he took on several odd jobs working as a bus conductor, and selling puff-puff and ice cream.
Reflecting on that time, Chatta said, “My mum wanted me to finish school after my dad died, but I refused. I thought Lagos would be better, but it was a struggle. I had no qualifications, so I had to take up jobs like selling snacks and working as a conductor for about eight years.”
