Mercy Aigbe, a seasoned Nollywood actress and producer, has talked candidly about her conversion from Christianity to Islam, characterizing the process as first difficult.
During an interview on WasilaCoded TV’s Iriri Mi show, Aigbe talked about her journey and her desire to convert to Islam after more than 40 years of Christianity.
The actress, known for her roles in numerous Yoruba films, explained that her choice was influenced by her desire for unity within her marriage. Before their union, Aigbe was a devoted Christian, while her husband was a practicing Muslim.
Despite their different religious backgrounds, she made the decision to convert to Islam to foster closer family ties. She emphasized that her husband did not compel her to switch faiths, but rather, she made the decision on her own after deep reflection.

Aigbe acknowledged that adapting to Islamic practices was not easy for her at first. Having been immersed in Christian traditions for most of her life, she initially found it difficult to adjust to the new religious routines and customs.
However, her commitment to serving God and her determination to embrace the teachings of Islam helped her navigate the transition.
The actress also expressed her belief that both Christianity and Islam worship the same God, a perspective that made it easier for her to embrace her new faith.
She said: “Christianity has been a part of my life because I had been practicing it for over 40 years, so it made practicing Islam a little difficult for me at first because I’m not used to the new practices. Sometimes, I forget to pray five times daily and whenever I misses one prayer I find it difficult to make it up. There are also several things I’m still trying to get adapted to too. But because I love God and I love serving Him, it made me determined in the new religion.”
