Manchester City made waves on transfer deadline day by securing a deal with FC Porto for midfielder Nicolas González, making them the biggest spenders of the January 2025 transfer window.

In a dramatic last-minute decision, City signed González after initially hesitating to meet his release clause, ultimately agreeing to invest around €60 million. Porto stood firm on their valuation, especially since a significant portion of the fee would go to González’s former club, Barcelona, due to a clause in his contract. This clause dictates that up to 40% of the transfer fee must be paid to Barcelona, adding complexity to the deal.

He also highlighted the talent within the squad, stating, “Look at the squad they have here. It’s unbelievable, full of world-class players. There isn’t a footballer in the world who wouldn’t want to be part of this set-up.”

The midfielder also shared his enthusiasm about working under Pep Guardiola: “I know the reputation Pep has, and I cannot wait to work with him. I’m honoured he wants me to play in his team.”

Eager to get started, González added, “I just want to meet my teammates, the staff here, and then I want to play in front of the City fans!”

With the addition of González, Manchester City’s spending for the January transfer window has reached approximately €210 million, following previous signings of Omar Marmoush and Abdukodir Khusanov.
