Arsenal are “optimistic” that goalkeeper David Raya will be fit to face Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday.
Raya was absent for Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Girona in the Champions League on Wednesday. Although he traveled with the squad to Spain, he was unexpectedly left out of the matchday squad. Mikel Arteta confirmed just before kick-off that the Spain international was “not fit,” later adding, “He certainly could not play, he’s injured and that’s it.”
When asked about the nature of the injury, Arteta replied simply, “Let’s see how it goes.” However, The Athletic has reported that there are “no serious concerns” over Raya’s condition, suggesting he could return in time for Sunday’s clash with City.

Backup goalkeeper Neto filled in for Raya against Girona, with 16-year-old academy player Jack Porter promoted to the bench as cover. Neto, who joined on loan from Bournemouth as a replacement for Aaron Ramsdale, became Arsenal’s oldest debutant in over a century, at 35 years old.
The veteran Brazilian, however, had a shaky start, including a nervy moment early on and a bizarre situation where he found himself stranded 30 yards from goal as Girona took the lead through Arnaut Danjuma, a former Tottenham loanee.
Even if Raya is not ready to return for the City match, Arteta expressed confidence in Neto’s ability to step in, should he be required to deputize once again.
