Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim revealed he moved Kobbie Mainoo to a different position during Thursday’s Europa League win over FCSB after noticing the teenager “struggling” with his defensive duties.
Mainoo had started in an attacking role alongside Christian Eriksen behind striker Rasmus Hojlund, with Bruno Fernandes dropping into the deeper position Mainoo typically occupies. In the second half, after Alejandro Garnacho came on, Mainoo shifted to the right wing and played a key part in the opening goal, providing an assist for Diogo Dalot. The United academy graduate later sealed a 2-0 victory, scoring himself from a Garnacho cutback.
“Mainoo played in a different position, with more freedom, closer to the box,” Amorim explained post-match. “He’s so technical, he can change the game from there. I think it’s a good position for him, but we’ll see. I’m happy to see Kobbie enjoy the game more. Sometimes, he worries about recovery runs and defending, and I know he’s trying. Today, I felt he enjoyed the game more, and I’m happy for that.”

Amorim crafted this new role for Mainoo after a period of observation and training. “I can understand my players better now,” the Portuguese coach said. “We need time to understand the players. He was struggling defensively as a midfielder, but as a No. 10, you can see he’s much freer, making plays close to the box where he’s very good, connecting with others. It takes time to figure out the best position for each player.”
Mainoo expressed his satisfaction with the new role, saying, “I enjoyed it. I’m just happy to be on the pitch for Manchester United, but I’ll play wherever the manager needs me.”
