Real Madrid are reportedly set to avoid entering the transfer market for a centre-back before the January window closes, thanks to the encouraging progress Eder Militao has made in his injury rehabilitation.
Militao suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture in his right knee in early November, following a similar injury to his left knee just 15 months earlier. Despite typical recovery timelines ranging from seven months to over a year, the Brazilian defender is determined to return to action before the end of the season.
According to MARCA, the “remarkable” strides Militao has made in under three months have influenced Madrid’s decision to hold off on signing defensive reinforcements.

When Militao initially sustained the injury, concerns arose about the team’s depth at centre-back. However, the situation has since improved with David Alaba returning from his own long-term ACL injury, Raul Asencio proving his worth, Jacobo Ramon rejoining the squad, and Aurelien Tchouameni capable of deputizing in defense alongside the ever-reliable Antonio Rudiger.
If Militao remains on track for a quicker-than-usual recovery and returns by the start of next season—or even during the final stages of this campaign—Madrid are expected to manage without signing a new centre-back. This approach may extend into the summer transfer window as well.
With financial resources limited, Real Madrid are likely to prioritize reinforcements elsewhere. Midfield is a particular focus, with Luka Modric turning 40 later this year. Newcastle United star Sandro Tonali has emerged as a potential target, though Manchester City are also reportedly interested, which could spark a bidding war.
Additionally, the club is monitoring Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich, who is entering the final six months of his contract, although Bayern remains keen to keep him.
