Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has revealed that the club must offload players during the January transfer window before they can make any new signings.
The Red Devils currently languish in 14th place in the Premier League, with just 22 points from 19 games. Many fans have called for a squad overhaul to prevent what Amorim has warned could turn into a “relegation battle.”
However, financial constraints tied to the club’s Profit & Sustainability threshold leave United unable to make significant investments without first generating funds through player sales.

“We don’t have that possibility [to buy] in January if we don’t take some players [out of the squad],” Amorim admitted. “You know the situation better than me. I can’t just come in and start spending money to change the team.”
While Amorim has voiced concerns about the squad’s suitability to his system, his ability to reinforce in January appears limited by both financial restrictions and a lack of marketable assets.
Marcus Rashford, recently reintegrated into the squad, could theoretically attract interest, but his £40m price tag and high wages may deter suitors. Similarly, Casemiro has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia but is unlikely to fetch a significant fee. Joshua Zirkzee, reportedly drawing interest from Serie A, is said to be keen to stay and fight for his place at United.
One potential target is Paris Saint-Germain left-back Nuno Mendes, who previously worked with Amorim at Sporting CP. However, United will need to raise substantial funds through sales before they can consider a move for the 22-year-old.
